Summer instability on July 8: hot weather and localized storms

On July 8, we expect typical July weather – heat, high humidity, and localized thunderstorms, with riskier swimming conditions in some places along the Black Sea coast.

Important note: The following forecast has been prepared as a journalistic piece based on publicly available meteorological models and typical climatic characteristics for the beginning of July. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, always follow the official bulletin of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology.

Weather in Burgas and the region on July 8

On July 8, typical summer weather is expected in Burgas – mostly warm and muggy, with variable cloudiness and possible brief showers in the afternoon.

The maximum air temperature in the city of Burgas will be around 30°C, and the minimum – around 20°C. The interior of the region (Karnobat, Aytos, Sredets) will be 1–2 degrees warmer during the day.

The probability of precipitation for Burgas and the coastal zone is about 50%, with short but intense showers and thunderstorms possible in the afternoon and evening hours.

The sea water temperature near Burgas will be around 24–25°C, characteristic for the beginning of July and suitable for swimming, especially in the earlier hours of the day.

A light to moderate wind from the east-southeast is expected with speeds around 4–7 m/s, with temporary strengthening near thunderstorm cells. In open areas along the coast, a stronger breeze and slight swell will be felt.

Preliminary safety assessment for swimming along the Burgas coast on July 8:

  • morning – green flag: relatively calm sea conditions, good visibility, and lower swell;
  • afternoon – yellow flag: expected local storms, increase in wind and swell, increased caution and monitoring of lifeguards is recommended;
  • evening during active thunderstorm cells – on individual beaches a red flag may be raised until the storm passes.

Sofia and the Sofia region

In the Sofia area, the day will begin with more sun and broken clouds, but in the afternoon, the development of cumulus-rain clouds with brief showers and thunderstorms is expected.

Maximum temperatures will hover around 27–29°C, and minimums – around 16–18°C. The air will be relatively humid, which will increase the feeling of muggy weather.

The probability of precipitation in the capital and its surroundings is between 40 and 60%, with more intense but short thunderstorms possible in individual neighborhoods.

The wind will be light to moderate, mostly from the west-southwest, with temporary gusts during thunderstorm phenomena.

Eastern and Western Bulgaria

Western Bulgaria

In Western Bulgaria (Blagoevgrad, Kyustendil, Vidin, Vratsa, Pernik, Montana), the morning hours will be mostly sunny, and in the afternoon – with increasing cloudiness and local showers.

Daytime temperatures will reach 28–31°C, and night temperatures will remain around 16–19°C. Along the Danube River, it will be 1–2 degrees warmer.

The probability of precipitation in Western Bulgaria is about 40–50%, higher in mountain areas and basins, where short but intense storms with thunder and strong wind can develop.

Eastern Bulgaria

In Eastern Bulgaria, outside the coast (Shumen, Sliven, Yambol, Targovishte, Razgrad, Dobrich), mostly sunny weather is expected before noon, followed by variable cloudiness in the afternoon.

Maximum temperatures will be in the range of 29–32°C, and minimums – around 18–20°C. In some areas, it will be hot and muggy due to the high humidity.

The probability of precipitation in the eastern interior regions is about 30–40%, with a more significant risk of short storms in the afternoon and evening hours.

The wind in Eastern Bulgaria will be light to moderate from the east-northeast, with more noticeable strengthening in open fields and hilly areas.

Weather in the mountains

In the country's mountain regions on July 8, unstable weather will prevail. The morning will be more often sunny, and around and after noon, powerful cumulus-rain clouds will develop.

In the lower mountain parts, daytime temperatures will be around 20–23°C, at 1200–1500 m – 15–18°C, and along the high ridges of Rila, Pirin, and the Stara Planina – around 9–13°C.

The probability of afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the mountains is high – between 60 and 80%. In some places, strong wind gusts, temporarily reduced visibility, and dangerous conditions for tourism along open ridges are expected.

The wind in the high parts will be moderate, temporarily strong, mostly from the west-southwest. During thunderstorms, it is recommended to avoid ridge crossings and high, open areas.

Black Sea coast

Along the entire Black Sea coast, including the North (Dobrich and Varna regions) and the South coast (Burgas region), a typical summer day is expected – sun before noon, variable cloudiness, and possible afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

Maximum temperatures along the coast will be in the range of 27–30°C, and minimums – around 19–21°C. In the resorts around Burgas, Sunny Beach, Sozopol, and Primorsko, it will be slightly warmer and more humid.

The sea water temperature along the Black Sea coast will be around 23–25°C, with the warmest expected in the bays and shallows along the Southern Black Sea coast.

The wind will be light to moderate, mainly from the east-southeast, with speeds between 3 and 7 m/s. In the afternoon, the breeze effect will bring a slight strengthening of the wind and more noticeable swell, especially along open beaches.

Preliminary assessment of flags along the Black Sea coast on July 8:

  • morning – predominantly green flag: relatively calm sea, suitable for swimming for most age groups;
  • afternoon – in some places yellow flag due to increased swell, currents, and risk of storms;
  • during active thunderstorms – locally red flag and temporary restriction of swimming until the front passes.

It is recommended that beachgoers follow the instructions of the lifeguards and the current warnings for thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon hours.
