The consumer protection commission (KZP) begins checks at all banks in Bulgaria today to see whether they raised fees without good reason, the commission said. Results are due in the last week of October, in line with the deadlines set by law.

Inspectors will ask banks for data on their fees and on any increases since 1 January 2025. A bank that put up a price must give an economic reason, meaning it must explain why the rise is justified.

KZP will go through the banks' price lists and the fees for the most used services. These include opening and running a current account, cash withdrawals and deposits at ATMs and at branch counters, bank transfers, debit and credit cards, and other services. The commission will also check the monthly fees of the different packages banks offer customers.

In Sofia, complaints are taken at the KZP reception desk at 1 Vrabcha Street, ground floor, from 9:00am to 5:30pm. People outside the capital can file them at the commission's regional offices, whose addresses are on its website. The consumer hotline is 0700 111 22.

Earlier today, KZP said it had alerted the authorities to a fraud by a firm that sells goods through sales presentations held outside shops.
