From November 15 to March 1, the control over winter tires becomes even stricter: fines for worn or inappropriate tires reach 100 BGN and the deduction of penalty points. The rules apply to everyone, and the effect — higher road safety.

With the onset of the winter season, the Ministry of Interior/Traffic Police (Traffic Police) introduces new, stricter measures against drivers with inappropriate tires. According to the latest amendments to the Road Traffic Act, from November 15 to March 1, all vehicles must be equipped with winter tires or tires with a minimum tread depth of no less than 4 mm.

The fine for offenders is now 100 BGN, accompanied by the deduction of 6 penalty points. In particularly dangerous violations or extremely worn tires, the penalty can reach 200–500 BGN. According to Traffic Police statistics, dozens of acts were drawn up on the main highways of the country on the first day of the campaign in November.

The law allows the use of summer or all-season tires if they meet the tread depth requirement. Nevertheless, experts emphasize that summer tires lose grip below 6°C, and the emergency braking distance doubles compared to winter tires. ADAC and control bodies recommend using certified winter tires regardless of the marking, as the "soft" compound remains effective at low temperatures.

Annual tire tests reveal that inappropriate tires (especially summer or heavily worn ones) are directly responsible for over 10% of serious accidents in winter conditions. In the period 2024–2025, road accidents caused by poor grip increased by 7% according to the Traffic Police report.

Experts advise drivers to replace tires on time, maintain the correct balance, and check not only the tread but also the side damage. Additionally, the disposal of worn tires in unauthorized places is sanctioned with fines of up to 4000 BGN.

Statistical analyzes and forecasts of the Ministry of Interior indicate that tightening control will reduce serious accidents in winter by at least 12% and increase overall road safety. Over 60% of the surveyed drivers already use winter tires, but the authorities aim for full coverage by 2027.
