Researchers from the University of Food Technologies in Plovdiv have developed a revolutionary biopolymer film that self-heals when damaged and simultaneously extends the shelf life of packaged products. The discovery has already been patented and is set to undergo industrial testing.

A team of scientists at the University of Food Technologies in Plovdiv presented an innovative biopolymer film that self-heals from physical damage and at the same time extends the shelf life of packaged foods. The discovery has already been patented and is set to undergo industrial testing in partnership with Bulgarian dairy producers.

The film is made based on cellulose and chitosan - natural materials derived from plant and marine sources. The key is the inclusion of an enzyme-active matrix that allows "sealing" of microcracks upon contact with moisture.

According to Prof. Dr. Adelina Georgieva, the lead researcher, the solution can be applied to the packaging of cheeses, meats, and fruits, reducing losses in the retail network by up to 30%.
