An information meeting regarding the introduction of the euro was held in Kameno
Kameno – An information meeting, organized by the Commission for Consumer Protection (CPC), gathered citizens, business representatives and the municipal administration in Kameno to discuss the upcoming introduction of the euro from January 1, 2026. The event, which took place in the building of the Municipal Council, is part of a broad national campaign aimed at informing the population about the key changes related to the transition to the single European currency.
A representative of the CPC, Danaila Kostova, chief inspector in the commission, presented to those present key clarifications on issues concerning daily payments and consumer protection during the transition period. Among the topics discussed was the specific question of the change to be given after January 1, 2026. Kostova explained that during the first month of the new year, payments will be possible in both levs and euros, but the change will be given only in one currency – primarily in euros, and in the absence of sufficient cash – in levs. She emphasized that the main goal is to ensure a smooth and trouble-free transition for both citizens and businesses.
The atmosphere in the hall was tense while business representatives and citizens asked questions about the exchange of money and bank limits. The participants showed interest in information about the amounts that can be exchanged at the counter, as well as about the service packages that banks will offer to individuals and companies. The CPC assured that the institutions are working in close cooperation with the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) and the banking sector, and that all changes will be announced on time and will be accompanied by clear instructions for citizens.
In the lively discussion, the question of security in post offices from the beginning of next year was also raised, when elderly people will be able to exchange their savings. Those present unanimously expressed the need for increased police presence in these areas to prevent possible fraud and attacks against older citizens.
Kostova emphasized the fact that the Commission continues to actively monitor the prices of over 100 essential goods, with the aim of preventing speculative price increases in the period before the introduction of the euro. The monitoring will continue after the adoption of the euro, she assured, calling on consumers to be careful and to report any suspicions of illegal changes in prices. Special attention was paid to the need for additional information and training for cashiers and employees in commercial establishments, especially in smaller settlements. Kostova emphasized the importance of the ability to recognize fake euro banknotes, which will be of key importance in the first months of the introduction of the new currency.
The meeting in Kameno is part of a series of regional events organized by state institutions, which aim to provide timely and reliable information on the process of introducing the euro in Bulgaria. CPC representatives called on citizens and businesses to inform themselves only from official sources and to avoid unverified publications on social networks, which often generate unnecessary tension.
