Greece's foreign ministry has strongly condemned drone strikes on merchant ships off the Bulgarian coast. It also posted its statement on its X account.

This report follows our earlier story on the opposition's call for an urgent meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security after reports of ships hit in the Black Sea.

Athens reacted after prime minister Rumen Radev said on Tuesday that two more ships in the Black Sea had come under drone attack.

The ministry said the strikes endanger human life, safety at sea and safe shipping. Respect for international law, including the law of the sea, is of fundamental importance, it said.

"Greece expresses its solidarity with Bulgaria, welcomes the immediate response of the rescue services and stresses the need to hold those responsible to account," the statement said.

Two more merchant ships were hit by sea and aerial drones in early October, in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone.
