The European Commission is monitoring Bulgaria's fiscal discipline

The European Commission (EC) plans to conduct a new assessment of the excessive deficit procedure against Bulgaria in November. This was announced by a spokesperson for the institution during a regular press conference, focusing on the country's budgetary framework for 2026.

"We are monitoring very closely and notice that if the current trend continues, we can expect higher net expenditure growth than previously agreed," the Commission spokesperson noted.

  • Autumn analysis: The EC will present its autumn economic forecast, which will serve as the basis for the assessment of Bulgaria.
  • 2026 Budget: The National Assembly adopted the budget on July 24, and Vice President Iliana Iotova has already promulgated it.
  • Risks: Brussels' main concern remains the potential exceeding of the net expenditure growth agreed upon earlier.

The institution emphasized that monitoring continues ahead of the November report, which will be decisive for Bulgaria's fiscal assessment.
