A magnitude 5 earthquake that struck on Monday, 19 October, had its epicentre in Romania, in the Vrancea seismic zone north of Bucharest. The National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (NIGGG) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences gave the location.
An automatic analysis of seismic data first put the epicentre about 173 km northwest of Silistra. That location has been ruled out.
Earlier report: Magnitude 5 earthquake recorded about 173 km northwest of Silistra
The quake was recorded at 11:51 Bulgarian time. Its focus was about 15 km deep, and the epicentre was at 45.42° north and 26.08° east.
An earthquake of this size on the Richter scale is considered strong and can cause serious damage near the epicentre. There are no reports of injuries, deaths or damage.
NIGGG says the data is preliminary. After further seismic analysis and new data, the magnitude, coordinates and location may change.
Of the three cities, Varna is closest, 285 km from the epicentre. Sliven is 305 km away and Yambol 328 km.
