Burgas Becomes a Member of BS&SPA: New Boost for Health and SPA Tourism

Another step has been taken in the sustainable development of Burgas as a destination for health and SPA tourism. The coastal municipality becomes the eleventh in Bulgaria to be accepted as a member of the Bulgarian Union of Balneology and SPA Tourism (BUBSPA).

The organization is a driving force towards the development of health tourism in Bulgaria. Many of its annual events and forums in recent years have been held in Burgas.

The membership is a logical continuation of the active cooperation over the last two years between Burgas Municipality and BUBSPA. The seaside city hosted the Eleventh Annual Congress of the organization in 2024, as well as the National Conference on Health and Wellness Tourism in 2025, during which the BDU and the organization signed a memorandum of cooperation.

During the past year, another important moment stood out - the chairman of BUBSPA, Dr. Siika Kacarova, was elected president of the European SPA Association (ESPA) for the term 2025–2029.

The joining of Burgas Municipality is another proof of the leading role of the city, combining natural resources, historical heritage and modern strategies aimed at medicine and wellness.

“This partnership has a strong symbolic meaning for us. Burgas is not just a seaside destination – this city is a place where natural resources and history meet the modern approach to health and well-being”, is the position of BUBSPA. 

Among the key advantages of the region are the thousand-year history of Akve Kalide, known for its ancient mineral springs, the natural resources of Atanasovsko Lake, which include healing mud and lye with proven health benefits.

At the same time, Burgas is developing a modern vision for the use of the sea climate and the potential of balneology.

Burgas Municipality will continue to work in cooperation with BUBSPA for the international positioning of the region and the imposition of the highest European standards in health care and prevention.
