Broken Hearts and Bowed Heads for the Heroes: The Bulgarian Air Force Mourns Pilots Petko Dimitrov and Ventsislav Dunkin
Deep sorrow and immeasurable pain have enveloped the Bulgarian Air Force (BAF) following the tragic death of two of its most dedicated sons. "With sadness and pain, we bow our heads in tribute to the memory of our fellow aviators Lieutenant Colonel Petko Dimitrov and Captain Ventsislav Dunkin from the 12th Air Base in Dolna Mitropolia," the BAF officially stated in a press release distributed via social media. This news, which echoed like thunder in peacetime, served as a reminder of the immense risks military aviators take in service to their homeland.
In its emotional message, which resonated throughout the entire military community, the BAF command emphasized the high professionalism and unwavering dedication of the fallen. "Lieutenant Colonel Petko Dimitrov and Captain Ventsislav Dunkin will forever remain in our hearts as unconditionally dedicated to their mission to serve the Homeland faithfully and honestly, to contribute to the fulfillment of the BAF's tasks, and to encourage common efforts for success with their strong motivation and love for aviation." The words describe not only two exceptional officers but also people whose passion for flying was a driving force in their lives. "May their daring aviator souls fly in light and peace," the statement concludes, sending a final, honorable salute to the warriors of the sky.
The tragedy that took the lives of the two experienced pilots unfolded on September 13, 2024, during a routine training flight. The L-39ZA aircraft, used for combat training, crashed during preparation for upcoming demonstrations. The incident occurred during preparations for demonstrations that were scheduled to take place at Graf Ignatievo Air Base on September 14. These demonstrations were part of a double celebration the country was preparing to mark: 20 years since the accession of the Republic of Bulgaria to NATO and 35 years since the introduction of the MiG-29 aircraft into service with the Bulgarian Air Force. The event was expected to attract thousands of enthusiasts and citizens, but instead of a celebration, it turned into a day of mourning.

Immediately after the incident, a team of military prosecutors and investigators, in cooperation with the Military Police, was formed on-site and began a thorough investigation. The purpose of the investigation is to establish the causes and circumstances of the incident, the prosecutor's office announced at the time. The analysis of the black boxes, the examination of the aircraft wreckage, and witness interrogations will be key to clarifying the tragic chain of events that led to the crash. Until the investigation is complete, the military community remains in anticipation, while also mourning its heroes, whose sacrifice and service will be remembered forever.
