Official representatives of the Bulgarian executive power outlined a large-scale plan for promoting national products with unique origin. During a specialized international conference in Sofia, Deputy Minister Dr. Lozana Vassileva presented detailed information about existing European mechanisms for protection of geographical indications.
At present, Bulgaria has four protected designations of origin: "Strandja Manuka Honey", "Bulgarian Yogurt", "Bulgarian White Brined Cheese" and "Strandja Herbal Tea". Additionally, two geographical indications are registered - "Gorna Oryahovitsa Sudjuk" and "Bulgarian Rose Oil", as well as seven foods with traditionally specific characteristics.
Within the Strategic Plan for Agricultural Development for the period 2023-2027, targeted interventions are planned for promoting quality Bulgarian products. Special emphasis is placed on information and promotional activities that support local producers and craftsmen.
The Ministry demonstrates a consistent policy of supporting non-agricultural activities in rural areas. Through targeted project receptions, direct support is aimed at folk arts and crafts, which represent an essential part of national identity.
The new registration regime for geographical indications is considered a strategic instrument for preserving cultural heritage. It aims not only to preserve traditional productions, but also to modernize and adapt them to contemporary European market requirements.
The conference "Bulgarian Crafts - Traditions Meet the Future" was jointly organized by the Patent Office of Bulgaria, the European Commission, and the EU Intellectual Property Office. The forum is part of the information campaign dedicated to the new registration regime for geographical indications of artisanal and industrial products.
Dr. Vassileva emphasized that Bulgaria possesses exceptionally rich traditions in creating authentic products that represent national wealth and deserve comprehensive protection at the European level.
