Bulgaria Strongly Condemns Violation of Polish Airspace While NATO Activates its Defense Mechanisms

Tensions in Eastern Europe have escalated to new heights after Russian drones violated the sovereign airspace of Poland, a key NATO member. The incident triggered an immediate and strong reaction at both national and international levels.

In response to Moscow's actions, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev stated on the social network "X" that

"the violation of the airspace of sovereign Poland leads to a dangerous escalation of tensions between Russia and NATO."
The head of state emphasized that such actions not only pose a direct threat to security but also undermine any efforts to restore the peace in Europe that the continent urgently needs.

Earlier in the day, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued an official statement, also using the platform "X". In it, the department declared its full and unwavering solidarity with Poland. This unified position of the Bulgarian state institutions reflects the country's deep concern about regional security in the context of the ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

The drone incident is part of a massive Russian aerial attack against Western Ukraine that took place earlier in the day, Reuters news agency reported. In response to the incursion into its airspace, Poland took unprecedented measures, activating its own air defense systems as well as those of NATO.

Poland announced that it had successfully shot down the violators, which is the first such case in which the country has resorted to armed force to defend its sky from intruding objects. This act of defense highlights the growing danger that Russian military actions pose to neighboring states.

Late in the day, the government in Warsaw requested urgent consultations with its NATO allies. The request was made under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which provides for collective consultations when the territorial integrity, political independence, or security of any member country is threatened. The activation of this article is a clear signal of the seriousness of the situation and the need for a coordinated response from the Alliance. This has further strained diplomatic relations, as Russia's actions are viewed as a direct provocation to NATO.
