Officers from the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP) took action to uncover and document a crime, after receiving a signal in January. The anti-mafia officers carried out a specialized police operation on June 3 in Gabrovo, during which they arrested a 43-year-old woman and her 18-year-old son.
The investigation found that the two had deliberately and over a prolonged period threatened a local businessman. According to the threats, if he did not hand over 500,000 euros to them at a place specified by them, they would proceed to kidnap his child, and then physically eliminate him. The perpetrators had carried out a detailed study of the targeted victim and had tried to cover up the traces of their actions.
A pre-trial proceeding has been initiated in the case under the leadership and supervision of the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office. The detainees have been left in custody for 72 hours by order of the supervising prosecutor, and the measure of "detention" is pending consideration.
