Solemn Commemorations in Pomorie

On July 30, Pomorie will mark one of the most tragic pages in its history – the 120th anniversary of the burning of the ancient city of Anhialo. On the occasion of the anniversary, Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias from the Greek Orthodox Church and Metropolitan Arsenius of Sliven will lead a solemn hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Holy Transfiguration of our Lord.

The events of July 30, 1906, remain in history as a moment of immense pain, during which thousands of residents were forced to leave their ancestral homes forever.

Program of Commemorative Events

  • High-level meeting: An official delegation from Greece will join the commemorations at the invitation of the Sliven Metropolis and Pomorie Municipality.
  • Signing of a declaration: The mayors of Pomorie, Nea Anchialos (Volos), and Anchialos (Thessaloniki) will sign a joint cooperation document.
  • Historical discussion: At 6:00 PM at the Dechko Stoev Art Gallery, Assoc. Prof. Rumen Avramov and Assoc. Prof. Stefan Dechev will analyze the historical facts surrounding the events of 1906.
  • Cultural program: The day will conclude with a concert titled "Meeting of the Anhialo Kin" in front of the Prosveta 1888 Community Center.

The Sliven Metropolis invites all parishioners from Burgas and the region to join in the prayerful commemoration and honor the memory of their ancestors.
