In early December, Burgas will host two captivating events dedicated to Japanese culture, both with free admission. The first will take us into the world of ancient literature, and the second – into the dynamics of samurai discipline.
On December 2nd at 6:00 PM at the NHK Cultural Center, the first presentation in Bulgaria of the new literary series “Zavihryane” will take place. It is the work of the University Publishing House “St. Kl. Ohridski” and presents significant texts from the Japanese literary tradition. The audience will get acquainted with the first translations of "Notes from Boredom" and "The Dream Diary of the Monk Myoe", presented by Alex Gъdelev, as well as the upcoming editions for 2026. The project will be presented by the lecturers from the “Japanology” department.
Two days later, on December 4th, also at 6:00 PM at NHK, the lecture “Samurai and the Art of Archery in Medieval Japan” is scheduled. The lecturer is Kiril Petrov, a specialist in Japanese history and a practitioner of kyudo, kenjutsu, and sojutsu. The lecture will reveal more about the development of the Japanese bow, the role of archers in samurai armies, and the art of archery, known as kyujutsu.
The events are part of cultural initiatives organized by the Branch - Burgas and FKNF, which respond to the interest in Eastern cultures. This interest also led to the unveiling of bachelor's programs with the study of Japanese and Chinese languages in 2025.
