Burgas residents can drop off plastic bottle caps and aluminium cans on Saturday, 31 October, from 9am to 1pm at the Billa car park in Trapezitsa, Club for the Future – Burgas said. The organisers use the money to buy equipment for children's, maternity and neonatal wards in hospitals across Bulgaria.
The drive is part of the 19th national "Caps for the Future" campaign, which holds its autumn events across the country in October. Anyone who collects caps and cans can take part.
"Anyone who wants to can help us run the campaign!" Eva Krachkova of the organisation told Bulgarian National Radio.
Caps must have the number 2 or 5 marked on the inside. Cans can be spotted by the ALU sign, and they can be crushed or whole. Aluminium cans do not stick to a magnet, unlike iron ones.
So far, money from the plastic handed in has paid for 26 incubators, five children's ambulances, one transport ambulance and two off-road ambulances. More than 60 medical devices have also been bought, and more than 50 medical facilities in Bulgaria have received them.
Since last year, secondary schools in Bulgaria have been able to get a defibrillator from the Clubs for the Future. Krachkova told Bulgarian National Radio the devices are bought with money from screenings of "Giants", a film about the campaign.
"Any secondary school can ask for an automatic defibrillator by filling in a form on our Facebook page," she said. After a request, the organisation contacts the school's management and goes to the school to hand over the donation.
In Burgas and the surrounding region, 11 defibrillators have been donated to schools.
