Children at nurseries and kindergartens in the Bulgarian city of Burgas began Healthy Eating Week today, 12 October. The first lessons are called "Superfoods for Superheroes!", Burgas council said. The week runs until 16 October under the motto "Healthy food – a superpower for all children!".

This report follows our earlier story about the children's march along Bogoridi Street, which ends the week. We wrote then that all municipal kindergartens in Burgas will take part.

On the first day, the children learned what fruit and vegetables give them, what vitamins are for and why their meals should be varied. Tasks and hands-on activities showed them how all this affects their health, energy and mood.

At kindergarten "Valshebstvo", the children put on chef's hats and made pictures, little figures and compositions from fruit and vegetables. They gave the foods "costumes" and "superpowers".

At kindergarten "Koledarche", the "Dolphin" and "Sunny" groups took part in the "Superfoods for Superheroes" lessons. The children found out that the food they eat affects how they grow and how strong and active they are.

The "Shturche" nursery and the "Detelina", "Kalinka" and "Delfin" kindergartens also took part.

The organisers say the aim is to build good eating habits from an early age. Through games, creative work and taking part themselves, children should learn which foods are good for them and want to look after their health.

In the coming days, the lessons will link healthy eating with exercise and an active way of life.
