Heavy sentence following a fatal accident at a pedestrian crossing in Burgas
The District Court in Burgas has handed down a sentence of 4 years and 8 months of imprisonment to a driver who caused a serious accident in May of last year. The incident claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman and left an 11-year-old child with severe injuries.
Despite the red signal for pedestrians, the driver bears responsibility for the lack of attention and inappropriate speed.
Case details:
- Date of the incident: May 31, 2025, "Demokratsiya" Blvd.
- Violations: Driving at 57 km/h in a 50 km/h zone and failure to maintain continuous observation of road conditions.
- Court decision: The sentence was imposed under the shortened judicial proceedings procedure.
The prosecution emphasizes that the fact that the pedestrians were crossing on a red light does not relieve the driver of their duty to prevent the accident if there was a technical possibility to do so. The verdict is subject to appeal before the Appellate Court in Burgas.
