Increased control and coordination between institutions

The Customs Agency has announced an increase in the number of checkpoints for inspecting freight vehicles on the country's roads. The decision was made following the first coordination meeting of the heads of institutions with control functions, including the National Revenue Agency (NRA), Border Police, the National Toll Administration, the Road Transport Administration, and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA).

The inspections are part of the compensatory measures in connection with Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen Area.

Main objectives of the inspections:

• Countering illegal migration;
• Combating the shadow economy and smuggling;
• Preventing violations in the trade of excise goods;
• Improving road safety and driver discipline.

The inspections are carried out at specially selected sites so as not to impede traffic and to save time for compliant traders. In parallel, work is underway to build a unified system for real-time information exchange, which will optimize the work of the institutions and reduce road accidents.
