Current state of dams in Bulgaria

According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW), dams used for drinking and domestic water supply are at 92.29% of their total volume. The total volume of complex and significant dams is 5295.5 million cubic meters, which represents 81.02% capacity.

Important: The Kamchiya and Asenovets dams are at 100% capacity, and Kamchiya, Asenovets, Pchelina, and Pancharevo are currently overflowing.

Where are levels above 90%?

A high percentage of capacity is observed in dams such as Srechenska Bara, Hristo Smirnenski, Yovkovtsi, Ticha, Yasna Polyana, Borovitsa, Studena, Karagyol, Sopot, Domlyan, Pchelina, Alexander Stamboliyski, Belmeken, Vacha, Krichim, Kardzhali, Ivaylovgrad, and Rozov Kladenets.

Safety measures and forecast

• Preventive actions: The MOEW has notified companies to ensure free capacity for the purpose of flood prevention.
• Meteorological situation: Short-term rainfall and thunderstorms are expected, and hail is also possible.
• River levels: A short-term increase in levels is expected in mountain areas, but without exceeding critical thresholds.
