Vasil Yanev - Grapulo, finalist in the "Artist of the Year" competition

BURGAS – The Burgas artist Vasil Yanev – Grapulo has once again affirmed his place on the international art scene, reaching the final stage of one of the most prestigious competitions in the world of contemporary art. The artist is among the 85 finalists in the "Artist of the Year 2025" competition, organized by the Visual Arts Association (VAA). The news is a source of pride in his hometown of Burgas, where the cultural community welcomes his latest major recognition.

This year's edition of the competition, which is being held for the third consecutive year, saw the participation of over 10,000 artists from around the world. Only 85 of them managed to secure a spot in the final selection, which highlights the exceptional competition and high level of the event. The Burgas artist was ranked with his work, titled "Sami"/ Alone/.

According to contemporary art curator Jessica Cherazi, who is part of the jury and works with institutions like the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, this year's competition attracted exceptionally strong candidates. "Out of over 10,000 applications, only 85 were selected, which speaks to the high level and strong competition," shared Cherazi, emphasizing the significance of the achievement.

The "Artist of the Year" competition has established itself as a key platform for showcasing the most talented and inspiring contemporary artists. The initiative is not just a competition but a tool for supporting the career development of artists. It provides not only prize money but also professional courses, opportunities for membership in prestigious organizations, as well as participation in a group exhibition in London for the grand winner.

The success of Vasil Yanev – Grapulo is further proof of his talent and persistence. Born in Burgas, he graduated with a degree in "Iconography" from VTU "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" – Veliko Tarnovo in 2000. His previous work and participation include numerous solo and joint exhibitions in Burgas, Varna, and Sofia, as well as participation in prestigious national and international events. These include the International Painting Competition "TARGET PAINTING PRIZE" in Spain (2025), the VI Balkan Quadrennial of Painting (2024), and the Contemporary Art Biennale "Friends of the Sea" in his hometown (2024).
