Traders in Haskovo are widely introducing dual pricing in leva and euros, complying with the new requirements of the Law on the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria. This was shown by a BTA inspection in the regional city, conducted after the publication of the legal changes in the "State Gazette" on August 8.

Large retail chains in Haskovo introduced dual price labeling a month ago, which now makes it easier for customers to navigate. Since the beginning of this week, most traders at the cooperative market in the city have also placed labels with prices in both currencies. A similar practice is observed in smaller retail outlets, including gift shops and flower shops.

The law provides for a grace period until October 8, during which traders will not be penalized for irregularities, in order to give them time to adapt. However, according to producers who personally sell their goods at the market in Haskovo, most customers still only look at the price in leva. Producers from the village of Zhalti Bryag share that only a small portion of younger buyers show interest in the euro price.

The introduction of the euro also raises some concerns among small traders. Owners of a small shop for packaged goods and sanitary products express worries about the procedures in January 2024, when payment in both currencies will be possible. "To avoid confusion then, I will need to provide two cash registers as a trader - one for leva and coins, and another for euros and euro cents, and as a consumer, I will need to carry two wallets accordingly", shares the shop owner. To avoid such complications, they are even considering closing their store during the first month of the year.

Traders predict that in January 2024, there may be a decrease in the number of older consumers at the market. "Everyone will want to clear out their available leva, and paying in two currencies will likely be difficult for older people, so we expect many of them will entrust their shopping during this month to the younger members of their families", they comment.

The introduction of the euro in Bulgaria is planned for January 1, 2024, with the country becoming the 20th member of the eurozone. This process will lead to significant changes in the economic and financial life of the country, with preparations for the transition already in full swing in the retail sector.
