A scientific team from the European Cardiology Society and leading researchers from Leiden University revealed groundbreaking results regarding the impact of physical activity on human health. The large-scale study, published in June 2025 in the prestigious journal European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, covers an unprecedented sample of over 80,000 participants aged between 40 and 69 years.
The ten-year large-scale observation reveals categorical evidence of the beneficial effects of moderate physical exertion. The study finds that people practicing aerobic exercises for at least 150 minutes weekly – which is equivalent to approximately 30-minute sessions within 5 days – demonstrate a remarkable 35% drop in the risk of serious cardiovascular incidents.
The most intriguing results relate to combined training regimens. Experts emphasize that combining cardio exercises with light strength training can achieve exceptional health effects, even when workouts are performed in a home environment.
A key finding is that even moderate physical activities – such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or dancing – generate significant benefits for the body. These activities directly affect critical health indicators like blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, and HDL cholesterol levels.
Prof. Klaus Engel, the lead author of the study, categorically states: "Extreme workouts are not necessary. The key to success is consistency and regularity." The experts' conclusion is unambiguous – heart health can be effectively maintained through accessible and moderate physical exertion.
