The Refinery in Burgas: What's Next After Plan B Is Missing?

Questions about the future of the Burgas refinery remain open, especially after the absence of a concrete Plan B. Former Energy Minister Alexander Nikolov, in an interview with BNT, outlined a worrying picture that requires urgent solutions.

Derogation and Alternative Supplies

Nikolov emphasizes that the derogation of "Lukoil" is only a partial measure. In order to provide fuels at acceptable prices, it is necessary to develop alternative supply channels. Without this, according to him, the stability of the market is in question, which also questions the economic stability of the region.

The energy expert insists on the continuation of the derogation, but warns of serious problems with fuel supplies. The situation is critical, he warns, and we must not forget that inflation may persist in the second quarter of 2026, even if it remains within the range of 10-15%, which would be considered a positive scenario.

Nikolov calls for immediate action to secure fuel for the State Reserve. He expressed hope that the long-delayed problem of corruption in the energy sector will finally be resolved. The situation is catastrophic, he warns, pointing out the urgent need to open "Pandora's Box."
