Prime minister Rumen Radev says Bulgaria's national security is not under direct threat for now. He spoke after a meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security on the situation in the Black Sea. But Russia's war on Ukraine, which began in February 2022, is still going on and poses risks to Bulgaria, he said.

Two ships were hit this week in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone. Radev said Russia's war on Ukraine is spreading to new areas.

The prime minister also took questions from reporters. He said the Bulgarian navy and security services have had no contact with Ukraine about what kind of drones were used.

"When we talk about national security, we cannot work with guesses. Our job is to find out the truth," Radev said.

The government will survey the area of the attacks together with Turkey, Romania and partners from the US. Teams are searching for drone debris to show where the drones came from. Radev said only after the debris is examined will it be possible to say what type of drone hit the ships.

Radev also said that, within its budget and together with the EU and Nato, Bulgaria is doing all it can to build a system that will convince people the country can respond to such incidents.

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), which Bulgaria asked for help, offered to examine the wreckage of the sunken ship free of charge and look in it for drone remains.
