Blockade at the Bulgarian-Greek border: What do drivers need to know?

On July 12, Sunday, farmers are organizing a protest that will lead to the complete closure of the Ivaylovgrad – Kiprinos border crossing point. Traffic will be halted between 09:00 and 22:00.

The reason for the discontent is the ban on vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons, which hinders the work of local farmers.

Why does the restriction exist?

The Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) reminds that the restrictions are in line with an intergovernmental agreement between Bulgaria and Greece from 2008. The checkpoint, opened in 2010, is designed for the passage of vehicles with the following parameters:

• Width up to 3 meters;
• Payload up to 3.5 tons;
• Buses with a capacity of up to 50 passengers.

The road signs near the village of Slaveevo were placed in compliance with this agreement, which is why the RIA has no legal authority to remove them.

Important information for travelers

Many tourists prefer this route due to the better road infrastructure, but the protest will require you to change your plans. It is important to note that since January 1, 2025, the crossing regime at the checkpoint has been simplified – with no stops or document checks, making the destination even more popular.
