The transport ministry plans to use Burgas's road safety training ground as a model and wants at least 6 such sites in Bulgaria, transport minister Georgi Peev said at a briefing in Burgas.

"We will use the model that Burgas offers. We will look at it and may roll it out nationwide," Peev said.

The idea for the training ground comes from Burgas mayor Dimitar Nikolov, and a project for it is already ready. Peev called the idea a good one. He said young drivers could practise at such sites and prepare to drive more safely.

"We see the war on the roads continuing, to my great regret," Peev said. He promised to do everything possible to improve the situation.

Burgas council announced plans for a regional road safety centre earlier this year. Its partners are the council, the municipal firm Burgasbus and the state-owned ESO Charge.

The project includes interactive classrooms, lecture halls and an area that recreates a real city street. The centre will also have a training ground where dangerous road situations will be simulated, so drivers can improve their skills.

Children and schoolchildren will learn the traffic rules there, and drivers will get practical training.
