In a current commentary to the media, expert Angel Naydenov presented an in-depth analysis of Bulgaria's current defense strategy, emphasizing the upcoming transformations in the sector. His words sounded against the backdrop of the visit by NATO Military Committee Chairman Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, whose meeting is considered significant in the context of regional security.
Among the main priorities that Naydenov highlights are the construction of a new military district and the subsequent deployment of a brigade. The financing of this large-scale project is expected to be carried out through the NATO Support Agency, which underscores international cooperation in the defense sphere.
A key point in his presentation is Bulgaria's commitment to increase defense spending to 3.5% of gross domestic product. At current economic parameters, this means about 7 billion leva annually, which must be invested extremely purposefully and with a focus on the sustainable development of the armed forces.
Special attention was paid to the drone development project, for which 60 million leva are allocated from the budget. Naydenov emphasized the need to first thoroughly investigate the country's needs for various aircraft before proceeding with specific investments.
Parallel to technical modernization, the expert also emphasized the creation of a new innovation center at the Ministry of Defense, which will be another important element of the technological upgrade strategy.
In an international context, Naydenov also commented on the geopolitical relations between the USA and Russia. According to him, the current situation is marked by a lack of constructive dialogue, with the American president Trump openly demonstrating disappointment with Putin's position regarding current conflicts.
The Ministry of Defense categorically emphasizes that at the moment there are no direct threats to national security. Nevertheless, experts are on alert regarding potential risks, such as floating mines in the Black Sea and the need to activate an anti-mine group.
The upcoming development of a new National Defense Plan after the NATO summit in The Hague is emerging as a key moment in Bulgaria's strategic planning for the coming years.
