New Safety and Recycling Standards in the EU

The European Union has ushered in a new era in waste management. With the entry into force of the new Packaging Regulation, the focus is on consumer safety and the transition to a circular economy.

"The new regulation is an investment in Europe's future – it will limit harmful substances and reduce our dependence on virgin raw materials," commented the EC.

The End of PFAS – The "Forever Chemicals"

One of the most significant changes is the strict ban on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food-contact packaging. These chemicals, known as "forever chemicals," pose a serious health risk, and limiting them is a critical step toward a safer environment.

What Changes for Businesses and Consumers?

  • Harmonization: Unified rules for manufacturers across the entire EU, facilitating trade.
  • Traceability: Mandatory labeling that identifies importers and manufacturers.
  • 2030 Targets: Phased introduction of requirements for recyclability and reuse, especially in the hospitality and restaurant sectors.

Challenges Facing Bulgaria

Statistics show that Bulgaria recycles just under 17% of its municipal waste, compared to an EU average of 48%. The new European requirements bring to the forefront the need for more efficient waste management systems and the introduction of a non-monopolistic deposit-refund system.
