Pension expenditures in the country exceeded 8.8 billion euro as of August 2026, according to the National Social Security Institute (NSSI) in its report on the implementation of the State Social Security (SSS) budget. This amount represents 65.2% of the annual plan and is 781.1 million euro more than during the same period in 2025, marking a 9.7% increase.

As of August 2026, there are 2,067,988 pensioners in Bulgaria, which is 10,036 more than in August 2025, or an increase of 0.5%. The average monthly pension per retiree has reached 557.60 euro, an increase of 39.31 euro, or 7.6%, compared to the same month last year.

Revenues under the consolidated SSS budget as of August 2026 amount to 5,488.8 million euro, representing 64.4% of the annual plan. Compared to the first eight months of 2025, inflows have grown by 476.0 million euro, or 9.5%.

The total amount of expenditures under the budget for the period is 9,912.2 million euro, which represents 64.9% of the annual plan. Compared to the same period last year, expenditures show an increase of 857.7 million euro, also 9.5%.

Specifically, 1,038.7 million euro has been spent on cash benefits and assistance under the Social Insurance Code, representing 62.8% of the annual plan. This is 76.0 million euro more than during the first eight months of 2025, a 7.9% increase.

The net amount of transfers under the consolidated SSS budget as of August 2026 is 4,414.3 million euro.

Under the Teachers' Pension Fund budget, revenues as of August 2026 are 54.4 million euro—66.4% of the annual plan, or 5.4 million euro more than during the same period in 2025. The fund's expenditures for the period are 46.1 million euro, an increase of 6.6 million euro compared to last year.

Revenues under the budget of the "Guaranteed Claims of Workers and Employees" Fund reached 1,685.5 thousand euro as of August 2026, which is 85.6% of the annual plan—an increase of 267.6 thousand euro compared to the same period in 2025. The fund's expenditures for the period were 829.6 thousand euro, or 33.4% of the annual plan, which is 245.2 thousand euro less than the previous year.

As of July 2026, NSSI expenditures for pensions and benefits from the SSS were nearly 8.6 billion euro.
