Enhanced Eco-Control: Results from Inspections in June

The Ministry of Environment and Waters (MOEW) has published the summarized data on the activities of the Regional Inspectorates (RIEW) across the country for the past month. To prevent immediate risks to the environment, eight compulsory administrative measures were applied to suspend dangerous facilities and activities.

A total of 2,451 inspections were carried out on 2,160 sites, with nearly 900 prescriptions issued to bring activities into compliance with legislation.

Sanctions and Fines

The results of the control activity include:

  • 127 acts for violations issued;
  • 62 penal decrees with fines amounting to 638,971.32 euros;
  • Over 86,000 euros in budget revenue from collected sanctions;
  • 160 polluted areas cleaned up following the intervention of the inspectorates.

Highlights from Regional Inspections

Special attention was paid to the Black Sea coast following reports of fuel oil balls. Inspectors from Varna and Burgas increased monitoring; no coastal sources were found, which points to incidents in the maritime area.

In the "Kaliakra Complex" protected area, unauthorized activities damaging protected steppes were identified, which led to the immediate suspension of operations at the site near the village of Topola. At the same time, nature reserves were inspected in the Plovdiv region, where no violations were found.

Other Important Measures

MOEW experts continue their active work on biodiversity conservation, with numerous distressed specimens of protected species rescued in June. At the same time, work is also underway on the issue of fires in regional waste landfills, following an analysis showing systematic incidents at 12 of the facilities in the country.
