The National Institute of Forensics has launched a large-scale project for technological modernization of DNA research, which aims to improve the quality and efficiency of expert analyses through the introduction of modern automated systems.

The Ministry of Interior is taking a significant step towards improving forensic research through a large-scale project for technological renovation of DNA laboratories. The initiative is funded by the "Internal Security" fund for the period 2021-2027 and will continue for 48 months.

The main goal of the project is to modernize the expert capacity in two key structures - the National Institute of Criminalistics and the Basic Scientific and Technical Laboratory in Burgas. The implementation of high-tech automated systems that will revolutionize the processes of DNA material extraction and analysis is planned.

The new technological solutions will allow significant acceleration of sample preparation and profiling, with multiple samples being processed in parallel with high precision. The systems are expected to optimize the introduction of DNA data from criminal registrations, comparative analyses, and unidentified human remains.

The project budget amounts to 2,798,145 leva, which provides for the purchase of two automated DNA extraction systems and four sample preparation systems. Additionally, the necessary compatible consumables and warranty support will be ensured.

Statistical data shows a steady growth of expert research in the "DNA analysis" sector between 2018 and 2024. This trend necessitates the introduction of modern technological solutions to overcome the workload and improve the quality of analyses.

Deputy Minister Filip Popov emphasized that the project will directly support the work of employees in forensic units and indirectly improve the operational and investigative activities of the entire sector.

The National Institute of Criminalistics conducts research in an extremely wide spectrum - from digital technologies through chemistry and biology to toxicology and ballistics. The new technologies will contribute to more effective fighting of crime, including organized crime and terrorism.

The project is emerging as a strategic investment in modernizing forensic expert potential, which will enhance the quality and speed of investigations through innovative technological solutions.
