On the eve of Children's Day, the Youth International Center in Burgas hosted an initiative aimed at improving the readiness of parents to cope with emergency situations involving children. Pediatricians from the University Hospital Burgas and paramedics presented the most important pediatric emergencies and ways to respond to dozens of parents, medical professionals, and students.
The main goal of the event was to increase the awareness and practical skills of parents for responding to emergencies in childhood. Trauma is the leading cause of death and serious injuries in children, with over 73% of incidents occurring at home, even in the presence of an adult. The parent's reaction is crucial, as the child's brain can suffer severe damage in just 3-4 minutes without oxygen.
Participants learned how to properly call an ambulance, transport a child in a critical condition, what to do in case of fever, febrile seizures, choking, anaphylactic shock, and other emergencies. Pediatricians from the University Hospital Burgas debunked common myths, such as the belief that a person should be tapped on the back when they choke and start coughing.
The event also included practical demonstrations, during which visitors had the opportunity to try skills such as chest compressions and breathing, and splinting a broken limb. The organizers emphasized the importance of investing in knowledge and skills for emergency assistance from an early age, as well as the need for active public engagement on the topic.
