Quantum Freezing of Rotation: Science Without Cold for a New World
Breakthrough in Quantum Physics
In early August, scientists from ETH Zurich and the Technical University of Vienna achieved a scientific result previously considered impossible – they 'froze' the quantum rotation of a nano-glass sphere at room temperature without the need for extreme cooling.
How the Method Works
Usually, for quantum effects to manifest, particles are cooled almost to absolute zero. However, the new approach allows 'removing' energy from rotational motion using only laser light, while the internal temperature of the particle remains high.
In the experiment, glass nanoparticles with a slightly elliptical shape are placed in a vacuum chamber and balanced by a laser. This way, scientists achieve 92% quantum purity of rotation, while the particle itself remains warm.

The method proves that quantum technologies can function without expensive cryogenic systems. This opens doors for their wider application and reduces implementation costs.
