The US used car market has undergone a shocking transformation. See how prices have jumped by over 38% and why you now have to choose between older vehicles or a larger budget.

The Used Car Market Crisis

The used car market in the USA is undergoing a severe transformation. If a few years ago a budget of $20,000 was a guarantee for purchasing a new and reliable car, today it is a serious challenge.

The average price of a three-year-old used car has now reached $32,651 – an increase of 38.2% compared to 2019.

Startling Statistics

  • In 2019, nearly 50% of 3-year-old cars cost under $20,000.
  • Today, only 11.4% of those same vehicles fall into this price range.
  • To find a car under $20,000 today, you have to look for a 7-year-old model instead of a 4-year-old one, as was the case before.

Which models have increased in price the most?

The price growth has spared neither mass-market nor luxury brands. For example:

  • Hyundai Elantra: +56% (average $19,178)
  • Kia Sportage: +50.5% (average $24,543)
  • Toyota Camry: +49.9% (average $24,829)
  • Porsche Cayenne: +75.7% (average $88,387)

Despite the general upward trend, there are exceptions. Electric models like the Tesla Model X have dropped in price by 17%, which shows that the second-hand electric vehicle market follows a different logic, related mainly to battery condition.

Conclusion

Buyers are facing a new reality: either significantly older cars or an increase in budget. The trend shows that cheap used cars are becoming a scarce commodity, and choosing the right model requires much more in-depth research.
