EWRC announced electricity compensations for households for June

The Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) has determined the compensations for the month of June 2026, covering part of the costs incurred by end-suppliers for electricity delivered to household consumers. The measure is part of the household protection mechanism introduced by amendments to the Energy Act and aims to ensure predictable bills, regardless of fluctuations in the free market.

Since July 1, 2025, the wholesale electricity market has been liberalized, but the price for household consumers continues to be set by the EWRC for a one-year period. At the same time, end-suppliers purchase energy at market prices, and when these exceed the base price of 71.60 EUR per megawatt-hour or 140.03 BGN/MWh excluding VAT, the difference is compensated with funds from the Security of the Electricity System Fund.

For the period from June 1 to June 30, the EWRC has set the following compensations:

• 49.20 BGN/MWh excluding VAT for customers of "Electrohold Sales".
• 49.28 BGN/MWh excluding VAT for customers of "EVN Bulgaria Electricity Supply".
• 46.49 BGN/MWh excluding VAT for customers of "ENERGO-PRO Sales".
• 37.71 BGN/MWh excluding VAT for customers of "ESP Golden Sands".

The regulator specifies that adjustment mechanisms were applied when determining the compensations in order to prevent unfair practices by the end-suppliers.

What this means for people

In practice, households will not pay extra for higher electricity exchange prices in June, as the compensations cover part of the electricity supply companies' costs. The funds are paid to the suppliers from the Security of the Electricity System Fund, not directly to the customers.

The EWRC further points out that the compensation has already been accounted for in advance when issuing the invoices. This means that consumers do not need to take any action and will not receive a separate refund. The mechanism aims to keep regulated electricity prices for households stable despite the rise in electricity prices on the exchange.
