The EU will stop all gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said in a speech to the European Parliament. Russian gas now makes up 12% of the bloc's gas imports, down from 45% four years ago.
"Four years ago, Russia tried to blackmail us. At that time, 45% of our gas imports came from Russia," von der Leyen said. She said supplies were cut off almost overnight back then, but Europe stayed united and came out stronger.
"Today, the share of Russian gas in our imports has dropped from 45% to 12%. By the end of next year, we'll bring it down to zero," the Commission president added. She said the EU has found other gas suppliers and put more money into clean energy.
In early 2026, the EU agreed rules to phase out Russian gas imports step by step. Liquefied natural gas from Russia will go first, with imports expected to stop completely by the end of 2026, according to EU figures. Pipeline gas supplies will continue until November 30, 2027 at the latest.
