On May 31, Rome once again hosts the spectacular final of the "Giro d'Italia": a 131 km urban route with eight laps around the Colosseum and Circus Maximus will decide the fate of the "Maglia Rosa" and the podium in the 109th edition of the Tour of Italy.

The Tour of Italy "Giro d'Italia 2026" reaches its climax on May 31 in "Rome", where for the fourth consecutive year and for the eighth time in the history of the race, the final stage is decided in the heart of the "eternal city". The 109th edition of the legendary "Corsa Rosa" ends with a 131-kilometer urban stage that combines a sports spectacle and a unique backdrop of ancient landmarks.

The final Sunday is not just a ceremonial ride – the route with technical turns, cobblestones, and a final incline of about 5% in the last kilometer provides real opportunities for attacks, both for the sprinters and for those still seeking a prestigious stage win at the end of the three-week drama.

The route: from EUR to Ostia and back to the Circus Maximus

The final stage is divided into two clearly defined parts. The start is in the modern business district "Rome-EUR", at the "Quadrato della Concordia", from where the peloton heads towards the coast and "Ostia", before the first pass through the finish line.

After this initial transition, the riders return to the city center and enter the final urban circuit – a 9.5-kilometer route that must be completed eight times. The loop passes by iconic places such as the "Colosseum" and the "Baths of Caracalla", and the finish is located at the "Circus Maximus" – a place where chariot races were held millennia ago.

The road surface is mostly asphalt, but there are also short sections with the typical Roman cobblestones "sanpietrini". The final straight of about 350 meters is on asphalt, and in the middle of the last kilometer, the incline reaches about 5%, which further spices up the sprint and could confuse pure sprinters who rely on a flat final acceleration.

Times and logistics: afternoon start, evening triumph

The grand arrival in Rome is planned as an afternoon spectacle. According to the organizers, the start of the stage is scheduled for around 15:25, and the crossing of the finish line at the "Circus Maximus" is expected between 18:00 and 18:30, depending on the speed of the peloton.

Parallel to the professional stage, on the morning of May 31, the "Family Ride" traditionally takes place – a free mass ride open to families, children, and cycling enthusiasts who have the opportunity to pedal through part of the route in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The event is organized by "Roma Capitale" and "RCS Sport & Events" and has become an integral part of the "Giro" final weekend.

Context: three-week battle and the favorites for the "Maglia Rosa"

The 109th edition of the "Giro d'Italia" began on May 8, and the finale in Rome comes after 21 stages, including mountain finishes, individual time trials, and classic transition stages. Even after the first ten stages, the main contenders for the "Maglia Rosa" crystallized, with names such as "Jonas Vingegaard", "Thymen Arensman", "Afonso Eulálio", and "Felix Gall" establishing themselves at the top of the general classification.

"Jonas Vingegaard's" victory in several key mountain stages and the strengthening of his position in the general classification before the final days made the Dane the number one favorite for the winner of the "Trofeo Infinito" – the symbolic spiral trophy of the "Giro". On May 31, the question is not only whether he will keep the "Maglia Rosa", but also how the podium behind him will look, and which sprinters will manage to fight for the prestigious victory in Rome.

Tactical picture: a chance for the sprinters or a day for the breakaway?

A final urban stage like the one in Rome is traditionally sprinter territory, especially since most teams save their energy for the last chance at a stage success. The wide straights and relatively smooth turns on the route suggest a scenario for a mass final sprint, where the lead-out trains of the major sprinting formations will go into action in the last two to three kilometers.

At the same time, the slight elevation changes, the cobblestones, and the accumulated fatigue from three weeks can also give an edge to the attacking breakaway riders – especially if some of the sprinter teams have already lost most of their helpers in the mountain stages. A well-organized and sufficiently numerous group can try to hold an advantage until the final laps, but statistics from previous finales in Rome show that control of the peloton on such days is usually ironclad.

Rome as the stage for the grand finale: sport and tourism in one

The choice of Rome as the host of the final stage for the fourth consecutive year is no coincidence. For the city, the "Giro d'Italia" is an opportunity to combine the sporting event with powerful tourism advertising – the cameras show footage of some of the most popular landmarks in the world, and thousands of fans fill the streets along the route, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a carnival than a strictly sporting competition.

For the local economy, the finale has a significant impact – hotels, restaurants, and small businesses in the city center traditionally report increased demand during the weekend of the grand arrival. For the Italians, however, the most important thing remains: whether one of their own riders will wear the "Maglia Rosa" on the podium in front of the "Circus Maximus", or if the winner will be a foreign star.

What the finish in Rome means for "Giro d'Italia 2026"

The final stage in Rome is the culmination of three weeks in which "Giro d'Italia 2026" offered everything – from dramatic mountain battles and surprise winners in individual stages, to strategic duels between the teams for the general classification and emotional moments for the local fans along the route.

On May 31, shortly after 18:00, when the first cyclist crosses the finish line at the "Circus Maximus", it will become clear who will ultimately put on the "Maglia Rosa" and lift the "Trofeo Infinito" to the sky over Rome. And for the city itself and the world of cycling, the finale will once again be a reminder of why the "Giro" is not just a race, but a moving festival of sport, history, and human endurance.
