Burgas - The Sea City with a rich and diverse history

More than a thousand years ago, on the site of today's Burgas, there were ancient settlements of the Thracians, Romans, and Byzantines. Remains of fortresses, thermal baths, and ancient resorts have been discovered here, and one of the oldest names of the region is Pyrgos - from the Greek "tower". The first official mention of a settlement with the name "Borukas", which will later become Burgas, dates back to 1499.

The city began to take shape in the 17th century when the Ottomans built a military base. Around it, fishermen, artisans, and merchants gathered, attracted by the calm bay and the abundant catch, and Burgas slowly turned into a lively coastal settlement. Its official proclamation as a city was in 1903, after which its rapid growth began - schools, a railway station, a modern port, and the first industrial enterprises were built.

An important step in the development of Burgas was the opening of the international airport in 1970, which still welcomes hundreds of thousands of tourists every summer. The city has also become a university center with the establishment of the Burgas Free University in 1994.

Today, Burgas is more than just a beach and sun - it is a city with a rich history and soul, where you can stroll through the sea garden, visit museums, festivals, and ancient finds, and at the same time enjoy the modern urban atmosphere. Every street in Burgas tells its own story, and the sea continues to write it.
