Burgas will host MREA 2025 – an international academy dedicated to marine renewable energy sources and low-carbon technologies.

For the third consecutive year, the city of Burgas will host a landmark international event that solidifies its role as a key center in the development of sustainable energy solutions. In the first week of September, the picturesque seaside city will bring together leading scientists, researchers, and experts from across Europe for the International Academy for Marine Renewable Energy (MREA 2025). The event, which will be held at the Congress Center of the Port of Burgas, is awaited with great interest and will attract strong international participation.

Forum for Innovation and Low-Carbon Technologies

The Academy is an initiative of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", organized in close collaboration with the university's Burgas branch and with the support of the British Embassy in Bulgaria. This year's event is financially supported by OMV Petrom, which makes participation free for students, doctoral candidates, and young researchers. The interest in the program is extremely high, which is why places are limited, and the registration deadline is August 28, 2025. The working language for all lectures and discussions will be English.

Leading Experts Discuss the Future of Energy

The MREA 2025 program is carefully structured to cover the most current and innovative aspects of marine renewable energy sources (RES) and low-carbon technologies. Among the key topics to be addressed are the construction of floating offshore wind farms, the essential role of electrification in the energy transition, as well as issues related to the regulation and financing of large-scale offshore projects.

Special attention will be paid to the production of hydrogen and ammonia from marine RES, logistics and operations in the offshore industry, as well as the assessment of environmental impacts. Experts will also hold in-depth discussions on risk management and scenario analyses concerning the future development of the energy sector in Bulgaria.

World-Class Experts and International Contacts

The Academy will feature lecturers with international reputations, including Andrew Stormonth-Darling from ORE Catapult, Simon Price from CRU, Muhammad Usman Siddiqi from the University of Bath, Gavin McBride from Enerview Solutions, and Ine Moulert from the Flanders Marine Institute. Other lecturers include Jorgen Nellemose from Perpetuum Energy, Maria Cobacho Calvo from the University of Barcelona, as well as a representative from the Bulgarian side in the person of Mariya Trifonova from Sofia University. The forum will also welcome specialists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), the Municipality of Burgas, and representatives of prestigious educational institutions such as the universities of Utrecht and Rotterdam.

The event is expected to attract strong international participation, with interest already expressed from Romania, Turkey, France, and the United Kingdom. For Bulgarian participants, MREA provides a priceless opportunity to exchange knowledge with leading experts and build key international contacts in the rapidly developing marine RES industry. The full program of the event and details about the lecturers are available on the academy's website.

For additional information and inquiries, interested parties can contact the event coordinator, Aneliya Stefanova.
