Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Elena Shekerlitova presented Bulgaria at a ministerial meeting organized on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Messina Conference of 1955. This conference laid the foundations and developed the concept of the European Economic Community, established two years later with the Treaty of Rome.
In her speech, Shekerlitova emphasized that the decisions of 1955, rooted in common European values and principles, represent a crucial step in the development of the European idea and remain relevant today. She pointed out that by affirming the fundamental principles of the EU - democracy, rule of law, the integrity of the common market, the four freedoms, and good neighborly relations, the Union will be able to address the current geopolitical challenges.
Bulgaria is making significant efforts for deep integration into the EU, already being a member of the Schengen area. After receiving positive convergence reports confirming the country's readiness for the Eurozone, Bulgaria is actively preparing for the introduction of the euro from January 1, 2026.
In her speech, Shekerlitova reaffirmed Bulgaria's support for the EU enlargement process based on the principle of the individual merits of each candidate country. Regarding the discussions on the Future of Europe, she emphasized the importance of the most inclusive and transparent process, involving the positions of all Member States.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of a declaration calling for deepening European integration and consolidation. During the event, Shekerlitova held a meeting with Benjamin Haddad, Delegate Minister for Europe in the French government. They discussed topics on the European agenda, confirming the shared commitment to deeper European integration and upholding the values and principles of the Union, including the need to adhere to the conditions and criteria of the enlargement process.
