Georg Georgiev emphasized the need for a sustainable peace agreement in Ukraine at a meeting of the EU "Foreign Affairs" Council, focusing on international law.

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev emphasized the need for a sustainable and fair peace agreement in Ukraine during an informal video conference meeting of the European Union's "Foreign Affairs" Council. The minister stressed the importance of respecting international law and the rules of the world order in achieving such an agreement.

During the meeting, current diplomatic efforts to end Russian aggression in Ukraine were discussed, as well as coordination with transatlantic partners regarding the upcoming meeting between the presidents of the USA and Russia in Alaska. Participants reaffirmed the European Union's continued solidarity and comprehensive support for Ukraine.

Georgiev expressed approval for US President Donald Trump's resolute commitment to ending military action and achieving peace through negotiations. He emphasized that

peace is not merely the absence of war, but should be the foundation for long-term stability, security, and prosperity for both Ukraine and Europe as a whole

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister noted the effectiveness of the sanctions imposed against Russia and emphasized the need for their continuation and strengthening until the cessation of Russian military aggression against Ukraine.

The situation in the Middle East was also discussed at the meeting, with Georgiev expressing deep concern about the expansion of the military operation in the Gaza Strip. He called for

the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by "Hamas" in inhumane conditions
and stressed the need to increase humanitarian aid for Gaza residents.

The minister confirmed Bulgaria's readiness to continue efforts for a lasting resolution of the conflict in the Middle East based on the two-state principle, in cooperation with EU partners.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that both Ukraine and Russia will have to make territorial concessions to each other to end the war. He indicated that his upcoming negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin will aim to explore the possibility of reaching an agreement.

In contrast to this statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said there are no signs that Russia is preparing to end the war in Ukraine.

These conflicting statements highlight the complexity of the situation and the challenges facing diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The position of Bulgaria and the European Union remains firm in support of Ukraine and insists on a fair and sustainable solution based on international law.
