During the international security forum GLOBSEC, held in Prague from June 12 to 14, 2025, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev met in a bilateral meeting with his Montenegrin counterpart Majda Gorcevic. During the conversation, Georgiev stressed that Bulgaria consistently supports Montenegro's European perspective and notes the significant progress made by the country since the formation of the current government in October 2023.
Minister Georgiev stated that Montenegro is rightly establishing itself as a leading country in the EU enlargement process, and welcomed the progress made over the past year, expressing hope that this positive trend will continue. He stressed that Montenegro's progress represents a strong confirmation of the validity of the principle of own merits in the EU enlargement process - a principle that Bulgaria consistently defends.
The Bulgarian Foreign Minister assessed Montenegro's goal of completing the accession negotiations by the end of 2026 as ambitious but achievable, but noted that this will require strong political will and a constant commitment to reforms. Georgiev drew attention to the importance of the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, freedom of expression and the media, as well as the effective fight against corruption and organized crime.
In conclusion, Minister Georgiev stated that Bulgaria remains ready to continue to support Montenegro politically, as well as through the provision of expert and technical assistance on its path to the EU.
