Three installations by Bulgarian and Chinese students are now open to residents and visitors at Burgas Port, next to the Sea Station, the organisers of the international project "Poetry of the Everyday" said. The project backs Burgas's bid to be European Capital of Culture in 2032. The National Academy of Art (NAA) and the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou are running it.
This report follows our earlier story about the "Poetry of the Everyday" exhibition. NAA rector Georgi Yankov said it would open at 18:00 in the Atelier gallery at the academy's Burgas branch.
The students come from the NAA branch in Burgas and from the academy in Hangzhou. They worked in mixed groups, swapped ideas and brought together their different cultural backgrounds, views of the city and approaches to modern art. Teachers from both academies also took part.
The project's theme is turning everyday objects, situations and gestures into art, and seeing the world around us in a new way. The artistic leaders are Prof. Zhang Jing, Prof. Asadur Markarov and Assoc. Prof. Dr Nenko Atanasov. Burgas council and the Chinese Cultural Centre in Sofia helped.
Prof. Markarov and Assoc. Prof. Atanasov opened the exhibition at the academy's Burgas branch. NAA rector Prof. Georgi Yankov, branch director Prof. Svetozar Benchev and Assist. Prof. Dr Maria Ganeva were also there.
Prof. Yankov thinks the students made something worthwhile and good in just a few days. He told them: "In a few months, as Eurovision gets closer, tens of thousands of people will take photos in front of your installations and tell the world about them."
The organisers say of their choice of city: "Burgas is the natural place for this meeting. The city lives with the sea – with its horizon, its movement and change, with journeys and returns." They say Burgas is also known as a "city of poets" because of its literary tradition. The work of Hristo Fotev and Petya Dubarova, and the presence of other writers and artists, are part of the city's cultural memory and artistic mood.
The first part of the project took place in Burgas, where the students worked together. Prof. Zhang Jing says both countries share the theme, which is tied to everyday life. The projects on Bulgarian culture come first. Later, in China, the students will make works inspired by Chinese culture.
