The government approved the positions and composition of the Bulgarian delegation, led by the Prime Minister, for the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The Council of Ministers has officially approved the positions that Bulgaria will defend, as well as the composition of the Bulgarian delegation for the upcoming 80th regular session of the United Nations General Assembly. The event, which takes place at a critical moment for global diplomacy, will be led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, according to the government's press service.

The delegation, which will represent the country at the highest international level, also includes Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev, Health Minister Silvi Kirilov, Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov, and Minister of Labor and Social Policy Borislav Gutsanov. The presence of such a wide range of ministers underscores Bulgaria_q_s multi-layered approach to global challenges that go beyond traditional foreign policy issues.

Session Theme: “Better Together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights”

Better Together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights

According to the government's press service, it reflects the urgent need to strengthen multilateralism through active diplomacy, open dialogue, and building sustainable partnerships. The theme emphasizes the equality and interconnectedness of the three main pillars of the UN: peace and security, development, and human rights.

Anniversaries: 80 years of the UN and 70 years of Bulgaria in the UN

The session also has strong symbolic significance, as 2025 marks two important anniversaries: 80 years since the signing of the UN Charter and 70 years since Bulgaria joined the organization. This double anniversary places Bulgarian participation in the context of a long-standing commitment to the principles of international cooperation and world order.

The Council of Ministers explicitly states that the jubilee 80th session is taking place during an extremely critical and complex period for the world. The planet is facing multiple global crises, which include:

  • military conflicts
  • humanitarian catastrophes
  • escalating climate change
  • terrorism
  • cyber threats
  • challenges posed by the development of artificial intelligence

Against the backdrop of these challenges, there is a worrying weakening of support for the multilateral system, which, according to the government, necessitates urgent reforms in global governance and strengthening the central role of the UN. Only by uniting around common goals can states restore trust in multilateralism, the official statement says.

The participation of the Bulgarian delegation in this jubilee session is seen as an important opportunity not only to present national positions and priorities but also to hold key bilateral meetings with high-ranking representatives of the UN and other member states. These meetings provide a chance to deepen diplomatic relations and to seek allies in addressing common challenges.
