Bulgaria's Food Safety Agency will run snap checks on potatoes at five of the country's biggest retail chains and their warehouses from October 6 to 12, 2026, the agency says.
Inspectors will check where the potatoes come from, whether batches can be traced, how they're labelled and what paperwork comes with them. They'll also check whether the potatoes meet quality and market standards.
The agency says it's paying close attention to tracing the potatoes, to make sure their origin hasn't been swapped somewhere along the way to the store. The checks aim to find out whether the potatoes on sale meet EU and Bulgarian rules.
If inspectors find any breaches, they'll take action under the law.
In the week of September 11-17 alone, food inspectors at regional food safety offices carried out 2,273 checks at production, retail and catering businesses, the agency says.
