Slavi Tomov Presents Max Weber at the Writers' House: An Analysis of "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism"

For 100 years, Max Weber's most famous work has been making its celebrated journey through the intellectual world. It is a challenge to outline, even briefly, the significance of the book for both the ordinary reader, curious about cultural history, and the researcher – sociologist, cultural studies specialist, philosopher, historian, economist, jurist, theologian…. In it, the “spirit of capitalism” is identified as a “historical individual”, and with that – as a starting point for the analysis of the genesis of “modern” capitalism.

Its core is the relationship between (Christian) asceticism and rational behavior, and Weber's main analysis is focused on the formation of habitualized practices and mental dispositions through which the individual is involved in the social and economic organization of capitalism.

In his erudite and enlightening Introduction, the translator, Professor Kolyu Koev, undoubtedly the best Bulgarian specialist on Max Weber, quotes the words of Terentian, that books have their own destiny, which depends on the abilities of the reader. And the one you are holding in your hands – including the history of its ever-improving presence in the Bulgarian language, of which the present edition is an incomparable peak, – demonstrates that “some books, before becoming the subject of subjective interpretation, embed in themselves non-negligible intersubjective contexts and thus acquire historical magnitude”.
