Slavi Tomov will present Katharina Adler's biographical novel "Ida" at the Writer's House in Burgas on October 7, 2026, at 6pm.

The book tells the story of Ida Bauer, known to the world as "Dora" — Sigmund Freud's Case No. 1. Author Katharina Adler is her great-granddaughter.

Young Ida broke off her treatment with Freud, which, in his view, denied him the satisfaction of curing her fully. According to the book's summary, her real life seems to begin only after she shuts the door of his office behind her.

From there, her path leads across three continents, taking in Vienna, Paris, Casablanca, New York and Chicago. The novel weaves together family history, women's self-determination, the early days of psychoanalysis, the character's Jewish identity, her passion for music, and the political upheavals of the time. Some of the characters are real historical figures.

The novel asks whether the treatment with Freud was a chance event or a trauma, how long its mark lasted, and whether later personal and world events could erase the scars of her girlhood. The summary describes Katharina Adler's writing as delicate, psychologically deep and rich in detail.
