On January 21, 2026, Wednesday, at 6:00 PM, in the "Petya Dubarova" hall of the Sea Casino Cultural Center in Burgas, the book "Lead Lots from the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast" will be presented. Its author is Prof. Dr. Ivan Hristov – a long-time researcher of the Black Sea coast, one of the leading underwater archaeologists in Bulgaria, deputy director of the National Historical Museum – Sofia.
The publication brings together all the finds from antiquity to modern times, which illustrate one of the most important, and perhaps the oldest navigational instrument – the lead. This is a lead weight that is tied to a rope, lowered to the bottom, and thus the depth of the water is determined. In his book, Prof. Hristov offers readers rich information about the significance of this instrument for navigation, its development through different eras, historical information about it, as well as the largest deposits of such finds in the Mediterranean Sea and in the World Ocean in general.
The author establishes that the concentration of such finds along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is observed in two distinct coastal zones – between Shabla and Durankulak and between Primorsko and Ahtopol, although similar finds are also discovered in the other zones of our waters.
The book will be presented by Dr. Igor Lazarenko – director of the Regional Historical Museum – Varna, and Dr. Milen Nikolov – director of the Regional Historical Museum – Burgas.
The publication is realized by the Regional Historical Museum – Burgas, the National Historical Museum – Sofia, and the National Military History Museum – Sofia.
