The comedy by one of the most frequently staged playwrights in the world – Neil Simon – "The Last of the Red Hot Lovers" will be presented on the stage of the Drama Theatre "Adriana Budevska" in Burgas on 28 May. The audience will see a title that has already become a true hit among theatre comedy fans and continues to fill halls across the country.
The production is by the Drama Theatre – Ruse and already has an impressive track record. The show triumphed at the comedy festival "Todor Kolev" in 2025, where it won four awards: the Grand Prize for Best Performance, the Best Direction Award for Ivaylo Nenov, as well as two acting awards – for Kadri Habil (Best Actor) and for Petya Venelinova (Best Actress).
"An intelligent comedy" about love, marriage and temptation
Have you ever wondered whether routine has locked your life into a comfortable yet suffocating everyday existence – and whether today might be the day when everything changes? It is precisely around this idea that "The Last of the Red Hot Lovers" revolves – an intelligent comedy which, with plenty of humour and life observation, explores love, marriage, temptation and the eternal human pursuit of happiness.
The leading role is entrusted to the passionate actor Kadri Habil, who adds a special spicy touch to his character Barney Cashman – a conscientious, seemingly exemplary husband who finally decides to bring some excitement into the orderly and slightly dull life he leads. In this "passionate marathon" on stage he is partnered by actresses Evgenia Yavasheva, Petya Venelinova and Dona Valova, each of whom brings a different shade to the comic and emotional situations.
A stage world between cosiness and irony
The set and costumes are created by Petya Boyukova. The characters move within a neat, cosy home – a space that accentuates the clash between respectability and hidden desires. A special highlight is the portrait of the main character’s mother, who "watches" what is happening from the wall. What is interesting here is that the image was initially generated with the help of artificial intelligence to resemble the character as much as possible, and was then finished by the set designer.
Paintings of cherub angels complement the visual line of the production. They act as an ironic counterpoint to the spicy and often absurd situations that unfold on stage, enhancing the comic effect without taking away from the human drama behind the laughter.
